Best Decision I’ve Made in a Long Time: Planning My Week on Fridays

One of the most effective changes I’ve made recently is shifting my weekly planning from Sundays to Fridays. It’s a small adjustment, but it has had a significant impact on my sense of balance and well-being.

Why the Shift?

For a long time, like many people, I used Sundays as a time to prepare for the upcoming week. It seemed logical—spending part of my Sunday organizing tasks, reviewing my goals, and setting intentions for the week ahead. But over time, I started noticing that it made my Sundays feel less relaxing and more like a day of work. The planning process would weigh on my mind, and instead of feeling rested, I’d head into Monday feeling like I hadn’t truly had a break.

That’s when I decided to try something different. Instead of using Sundays to plan, I shifted the task to Fridays. And the results were immediate—I felt lighter, more present, and able to enjoy my weekends fully. Knowing that my week was already planned allowed me to start the weekend with a clear head and focus on relaxation, family time, and personal projects without that lingering sense of “what’s coming next?”

Benefits of Planning on Fridays

Here’s what I’ve gained from making this change:

1. Clear Boundaries Between Work and Rest

By wrapping up my planning on Friday, I mentally signal to myself that the workweek is over. When the weekend arrives, I’m not thinking about Monday or what needs to get done—I’ve already sorted that out. It’s given me more mental clarity and space to truly disconnect from work, which is essential for maintaining balance.

2. A Fresh Start on Monday

When Monday rolls around, I’m ready to jump into action. I don’t spend part of the morning getting organized or thinking through priorities because I’ve already done the heavy lifting on Friday. This allows me to hit the ground running, feeling more productive and less stressed from the get-go.

3. More Effective Weekly Reviews

Reviewing the week on Friday while it’s still fresh in my mind has improved the quality of my planning. I’m able to evaluate what went well, what didn’t, and how I can adjust moving forward more accurately because the events are still top of mind. This reflection helps me make more informed decisions for the week ahead.

How Do You Plan Your Week?

Have you ever thought about when you plan your week? Many people stick with Sunday planning because it’s the norm, but if you’ve ever felt like it takes away from your weekend relaxation, consider shifting it to another day. Maybe Friday will work for you too, or perhaps a Monday morning planning session fits better with your schedule.

Planning is about finding what works best for your energy and lifestyle. The key is to feel organized and prepared without sacrificing your downtime. For me, that’s planning on Friday—but what about you?

When do you plan your week, and how does it affect your mindset?
