Finding Clarity in Your Message: How I Answer "What Do You Do?"

Do you ever find yourself stumbling when asked, “What do you do?” You’re not alone. I used to struggle with this too, but a recent experience helped me find clarity and confidence in my response. Here’s how you can achieve the same.

During a morning walk with my doggos, I had an epiphany. I realized I hadn’t fully clarified my message. With several upcoming opportunities, it became clear that I needed to refine how I communicate what I do. These opportunities include:

➡️ Heading to Salt Lake City for Dr. Eric J. Roman's 1Life Retreat
➡️ Speaking at the Springfield Tech Council STC Squared 2024 Conference
➡️ Sponsoring the Agency Builders Conference created by Business Builders

Given these exciting events, getting my message right was crucial. That’s where Donald Miller’s StoryBrand Framework came in handy. This framework helped me articulate a clear and concise answer to the question, “What do you do?”

So here’s how I now confidently answer that question:

“You know how business owners wrestle with chaos as their business is growing? I help them go from chaos to clarity with one-on-one coaching so they can expand their impact with less stress because I believe you can grow a business without giving up your life.”

Here’s a breakdown of the seven key pieces for achieving clarity in your message:

1️⃣ The Character: Business Owners
These are the individuals you’re serving—your target audience. In my case, it’s business owners who face significant challenges as they scale their operations.

2️⃣ The Problem: Wrestling with Chaos as Their Business is Growing
Identify the primary issue your audience faces. For business owners, it’s the chaos that comes with growth, which can be overwhelming and confusing.

3️⃣ The Guide: I Help Them
Your role is to position yourself as the guide who offers support and solutions. In my case, I’m the one providing guidance to navigate the chaos.

4️⃣ The Plan: With One-on-One Coaching
Outline the solution you offer. For me, it’s personalized one-on-one coaching, tailored to address each business owner’s unique challenges.

5️⃣ The Failure to Avoid: Stress & Giving Up Their Life
Highlight the negative outcomes your audience wants to avoid. Here, it’s the stress and potential loss of work-life balance that comes with unmanaged growth.

6️⃣ The Success to End With: Expanding Their Impact
Show what success looks like. In my case, it’s the ability for business owners to expand their impact while maintaining their well-being.

7️⃣ The Call to Action: Curious What Your Business’s Clarity Score Is? Find Out Here ➡️ https://theefficiencyconductor.com/

Encourage your audience to take the next step. For me, it’s inviting people to assess their own clarity and see how they can benefit from personalized coaching.

By breaking down your message into these seven key pieces, you can craft a compelling and clear response to the question, “What do you do?” It’s about understanding who you serve, the problems they face, how you guide them, and what success looks like.

So, if you’re struggling with clarity in your message, I encourage you to use this framework. It can make a significant difference in how you communicate your value and connect with your audience. Go ahead, find your clarity, and confidently share what you do!
