The Gratitude Sesh: Finding Peace in the Present
There was a time I started to hit pause on everything and tried something that brought me more peace than anything I’ve done before. I call it "The Gratitude Sesh." It’s a simple exercise, but it had a profound impact on me, and I want to share exactly what I did so you can try it, too.
Here’s the breakdown:
1️⃣ Opened a Blank Sheet in My Notebook
There’s something powerful about starting with a blank page. It’s a clean slate, free from distractions and expectations. For this exercise, I wanted to clear my mind and focus on what truly matters—gratitude. A blank sheet invites reflection and gives you the space to be present with your thoughts.
2️⃣ Got Away from My Normal Space
Stepping away from your usual environment is key to breaking the routine and creating mental clarity. I went outside to be in nature, which naturally brings a sense of calm and perspective. Whether it's your backyard, a park, or even just another room in your house, changing your setting helps set the tone for reflection.
3️⃣ Listed Important Life Categories
On that blank sheet, I wrote down these categories:
Family
Spiritual
Physical
Mental
Intellectual
Social
Financial
Career
These categories cover the core areas of life, each one deserving of reflection. They give structure to the gratitude exercise, making sure you think about every aspect of your life rather than getting stuck in just one area.
4️⃣ Sat There With the Blank Page
It’s not always easy to jump straight into writing. Sitting with a blank page for a few minutes helped me clear my head and get into a mindset of gratitude. No rush—just letting thoughts flow naturally.
5️⃣ Wrote What I Was Grateful for in Each Category
Once I was ready, I began writing down the things I’m grateful for in each category. Some areas were easier to fill than others, but that’s okay. The point is to recognize and appreciate the good things in your life. Whether it was the love of my family, the progress I’ve made physically, or the lessons I’ve learned in my career, I acknowledged it all.
6️⃣ Kept Writing Until I Couldn’t Anymore
I kept going until I couldn’t think of anything else. Some categories filled up quickly, while others took more time. But the process was incredibly therapeutic. Once I reached the end, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and contentment.
Why This Exercise Can Help You
If you find yourself wrestling with the push and pull of being present versus being ambitious, this gratitude exercise can help. It reminded me that, in many ways, I’ve already “won.” The achievements, progress, and blessings I already have are more than enough. Everything else? That’s just icing on the cake.
Gratitude shifts your perspective from lack to abundance. It helps you see that even in the midst of chaos, you have so much to be thankful for. And when you focus on what you have, the stress of what’s missing or what you’re striving for begins to melt away.
You’ve Already Won
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed by all you have yet to achieve, I highly recommend giving "The Gratitude Sesh" a try. You might just find that you’ve already accomplished more than you realized, and everything else is just extra. 💛
