The One Question That’s Changed Everything for Me in 2024

There’s one simple question I’ve consistently returned to this year. It’s helped me navigate decisions, filter distractions, and align more deeply with the life I actually want to live.

The question?

“What am I optimizing for?”

At first glance, it’s deceptively simple. But the more I sit with it, the more I realize just how clarifying and powerful it really is.

In the fast-paced world we live in, it’s incredibly easy to fall into default mode—reacting to what’s urgent, saying yes to what’s expected, and chasing metrics or milestones that don’t actually mean much to us. Before we know it, we’re living out someone else’s definition of success. We’re “achieving” but not fulfilled. Productive, but not aligned.

That’s where this question comes in.

When I ask myself “What am I optimizing for?”, I’m forced to pause and reflect.

  • Am I optimizing for time, so I can be present with my family, unplug from work, or pursue what lights me up?

  • Am I optimizing for health, so I have the energy and clarity to show up at my best?

  • Am I optimizing for impact, so the work I do actually matters in the lives of others?

  • Am I optimizing for relationships, so I stay rooted in community, support, and love?

  • Am I optimizing for financial stability or growth, so I can create freedom, security, and opportunities?

It changes depending on the season I’m in. And that’s the beauty of it.

There’s no right answer—only your honest one.

When I’m clear on what I’m optimizing for, my decisions become easier. The noise falls away. The comparison trap loses its grip. I know why I’m doing what I’m doing and that clarity gives me the courage to say no to what doesn’t serve me and say yes to what does.

This question has shifted me from reactive to proactive.

It’s not just about to-do lists or quarterly goals; it’s about designing a life. A business. A schedule. A rhythm. One that’s on purpose and with purpose.

So now I’m curious…

What are you optimizing for right now?
And how often do you pause to check in on that?

If you’re like me, you might find that your answer evolves. That’s okay. The power is in asking.

Let this be your reminder to realign. Not just with your calendar, but with your calling.
